Dunmall, Paul Sextet
Life in Four Parts
Released in: Great Britain
Recorded for his 60th birthday celebrations this release presents an all star recording for an extended sextet with guests, performing Dunmalls "Life In Four Parts". The work, plus a short introductory piece, shows Dunmall's talents in a variety of ways, borrowing from free improvisation, swing, groove and textural work to creative a massive and thoroughly entertaining piece of music. Ample room is given to each soloist, and the fourth part stars with a section for one of Dunmall's incidental instruments, the bagpipes, performed by himself and Mike Fletcher.
It's hard to believe that Dunmall is turning 60 with this release, his playing and writing are vigorous, creative and joyful, and he draws those qualities from his band as a great leader. Truly impressive, exuberant and insightful improvisation.
