"Ben Bennett and Jack Wright have been playing together since 2006. They met through Ben's non-poet dad, John M. Bennett, well known in the underground poetry scene, and a partner of Jack's since the 80s. The three played as a trio in the group Rotty What, documented on two recordings, "Naming the Dust," and "Ohio Grimes and Misted Meanies" (on Edgetone). Together with Evan Lipson, bassist, Ben and Jack form Wrest Trio.
Ben Bennett had musical training starting as a young child, studied jazz drumming, but ever since getting into improvisation, has pursued a self-taught, self-disciplined, intuitive approach to music-making. This path has led to his distilling the drumset down to a single vibrating membrane, finding different ways to draw sound from it, and continuous deconstructioneconstruction of the drumset and drumming. Starting in 2006 he has toured North America, Europe, and Japan. Groups that have names include Rotty What with Jack Wright and John M Bennett; Wrest with Jack Wright and Evan Lipson; Central Ohio War Coalition with Joe Panzner, Mike Shiflet and others; and bst.cr with Wilson Shook and Ryan Jewell. He has collaborated with Jack Callahan, Steve Baczkowski, Pascal Battus, Bbob Drake, Ben Hall, Michael Johnsen, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Ilan Manouach, Bob Marsh, Aaron Zarzutzki, to name a few, as well as many solo performances.
After leaving his academic position at Temple University in Philadelphia (European History) in 1972, Jack Wright was active in radical politics, and soon began directing his energies into music. Now at 71 he is one of a very small number of musicians in North America that has played free-form improvised music exclusively for over three decades. Through years of near constant touring, often performing where improvised music had never before been heard, he came to be regarded as "The Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation". He has deliberately eschewed the socio-aesthetic conventionsof musical careerism to pursue his own vision. Although his de-professionalized approach sets him apart from most musicians at his level of accomplishment, his art has always grown and opened new paths for the saxophone. He is an original and virtuosic saxophonist, a recognized improviser who is deeply lyrical, despite his wide distance from the mainstream.
Today Wright tours frequently in Europe and North America (and in Japan in 2006), playing sessions and concerts with a huge range of players, and bringing European musicians to the U.S. to perform together and meet American players. His vast list of collaborators includes some "name" luminaries, but more significant are the many obscure greats he has partnered with. "Jack Wright was born Pittsburgh PA in 1942 and grew up around Philadelphia and Chicago. He began playing saxophone in 1952, with private instruction; also singing in groups large and small through 1964, including a blue grass trio (playing washtub bass), which recorded an album, "Undertaking Bluegrass." After this he ceased playing music. He attended Lafayette College in Easton PA, where he studied European history and literature and graduated 1964; Johns Hopkins University, MA in European history, 1972; taught history at CCNY in NY and then Temple U. 1967-72, after which he left the academic world. In this latter period he was involved in left politics, organizing mainly on a community level, and began to become involved with music again.
Described twenty years ago as an "undergrounder by design," Jack Wright is a veteran saxophone improviser based mainly in Philadelphia. He has played mostly on tour through the US and Europe since the early 80s in search of interesting partners and playing situations. Now at 72 he is still the "Johnny Appleseed of Free Improvisation," as guitarist Davey Williams called him in the 80s, on the road as much as ever. And he continues to inspire players outside music-school careerdom, playing sessions with visiting and resident players old and new. His partners over the years are mostly unknown to the music press, and too numerous to mention. He's said to have the widest vocabulary of any, including leaping pitches, punchy, precise timing, sharp and intrusive multiphonics, surprising gaps of silence, and obscene animalistic sounds. "Ben Bennett started playing music as a young child, took up the drums in middle school, and has always been attracted to improvisation. His interest in jazz moved steadily towards the more avant-guarde, then to free jazz, and onward into the world of free-improv. His current music stems mainly from various forms of free-improv: maximalist, reduced, noise, etc. A desire to get the most varied and visceral array of sounds from the simplest instruments has led to an ongoing process of distilling the drumset to its essential sound-maker, the vibrating membrane. Using extended techniques involving breath and friction, as well as the time-honored tradition of hitting things with sticks, he plays an evolving pile of frame drums, pre-tuned drum heads, metal things, tubes, and other objects that can be combined and recombined to get a variety of sounds during a performance. This set-up lends itself greatly towards being crammed in a backpack, strapped to a bike, dragged along the ground, or thrown down the stairs, generally without physical or psycological damage.
