descriptions, reviews, &c.

"The French double bassist Benjamin Duboc and drummer Didier Lasserre have created together a unique, highly personal language. Their inventive and telepathic interplay can stir emotional storms produced with minimal, almost evasive elements and color any collaboration with vivid, spell-binding moods. Their latest improvised collaborations with baritone saxophonist Daunik Lazro and pianist Henri Roger demonstrate Duboc and Lasserre's greatness.

The French boutique label has released only four albums so far. All are remarkable masterpieces of free improvisation, and its last-Sens Radiants as its first one, Pourtant Les Cimes Des Arbres (2011) (by the same trio of Lazro, Duboc and Lasserre) is no exception.

The title of the 55-minute piece is inspired by a collection of poems by the Belgian-born poet-writer-painter Henri Michaux (1899-1984), "Jours de silence." These poems documented his weekly days of silence and meditation and his spiritual experiences of emptiness and tranquility during these days. This piece was recorded live at the Écouter pour l'instant festival in an old castle, now a protestant church, in in Le Fleix, south-western France, on September 2013.

The trio begins patiently forming a minimalist sound poem that investigates the acoustics of the historic space, the timbres of their instruments and the manner that its sounds resonate within the great acoustics of the old building. Slowly this reserved interplay intensifies and the tension is built. Still, with generous room for solo parts, each expanded extended by the next soloist, all faithful to the melancholic, almost ascetic, atmosphere of this improvisation, that follows the contemplative, inner-searching spirit of Michaux poems.

This arresting interplay features the highly personal vocabulary, the commanding art of these original improvisers and the manner that this trio articulates a profound emotional experience with almost minimalist means. Lazro tells thick tales, breathing, moaning, talking and shouting through his mouthpiece. Duboc and Lasserre create dark storms of sounds, employing inventive techniques of playing with the bow on the double bass strings, and delicate touches of the snare drum skins and cymbal surfaces."-Eyal Hareuveni, All About Jazz

Artist Biographies:

"The French saxophonist Daunik Lazro combines a tart, piercing tone with a quick mind and a flexible philosophy of music-making. His professional start was in bassist Saheb Sarbib's orchestra, a relationship he maintained through most of the '70s, which included three recordings. His first steps playing his own music involved a radical resizing of the cast on-stage, going from orchestra playing to solo saxophone concerts and duets. In the '80s, he busily played with many on the European improvised music scene, including bassist Jean Jacques Avenel, cellist Tristan Honsinger, violinist Carlos Zingaro, drummer Christian Rollet, and saxophonist Evan Parker, among others. In the mid-'80s, Lazro expanded his partnerships to include dance and theater projects, including work with the Company of the Chance.

He formed a particularly fine trio in 1987 with fellow saxophonist Michel Doneda and the brilliant ppercussionistLê Quan Ninh, playing at many of the major European festivals and also touring in Canada. Duets with the American free improviser Joe McPhee are a 1991 discographical highlight, during a period when Lazro also began playing viola. In 1993, he started his own orchestra as well as a quartet called Outlaws in Jazz with Jac Berrocal, Didier Levallet, and Dennis Charles. In 1995, he toured Europe in a triple-threat combination with both McPhee and Parker, and the former artist also joined him in a quartet the following year with the superb British contrabassist Paul Rogers. In the late '90s, he continued involvement with a series of orchestra projects, often as a guest soloist."

"Benjamin Duboc is a very strong voice on double bass, born 1969, studied with JF Jenny-Clark & Bernard Cazauran, and has played with many great musicians (as Ernest Dawkins, Bertrand Denzler, Roy Campbell, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Sabir Mateen, Byard Lancaster, Daniel Erdmann, Abdelahaï Bennani, Michel Doneda, Daunik Lazro, Sunny Murray, John Betsch...). And also with Henry Grimes for a great duet in Paris. He leads the "Nuts" quintet with Itaru Oki & Rasul Siddik on trumpets, & Makoto Sato & Didier Lasserre on drums. He plays in "The fish" with Jean-Luc Guionnet on alto sax & Edward Perraud on drums (double cd on Ayler Records) and Rocks in the Sea with Mario Rechtern, Eric Zinman and Didier Lasserre. Benjamin has a beautiful and big sound, you really feel the ground while hearing him... it's somethin' ! He also is recorded on Amor Fati, Futura Marge, Creative sources, le petit label, sansbruit."
