Grid Mesh: Live In Madrid (Leo)
Label: Leo
Released in: Great Britain

"This live recording forms a rich, highly accomplished, unexpected and multi-dimensional profile of contemporary improvisation. The combination of high level technical abilities and the 'live' setting mean that the precedence of real-time decision-making becomes further informed by the musician/audience relationship. Key to this music's success is the ensemble approach."-Leo Records

"Consisting of founding members Frank Paul Schubert (alto & soprano saxophone) and Andreas Willers (guitar etc.) with Willi Kellers on drums and Johannes Bauer on trombone the Berlin-based ensemble GRID MESH performs suspenseful, multi-dimensional improv music with a fascinating blend of acoustic and electric sounds. It's an energetic, subtle and intelligent musical journey on which the development of ideas and cooperation of these master improvisers are equally impressive than their mastery of a modern, biting jazz language. This shines effectively besides more abstract, lower key structures and bolder, quite archaic walls of sound that can even dip into irony. Thus a band sound is created that can truely be dubbed as "21st century improv music".

GRID MESH was founded in 2006 and released its debut CD "GRID MESH" on Farai Records in 2007. Following concerts all over Germany, the UK, Austria, Rumania and after an US/Canadaian tour in 2009, their second CD was recorded for the Brtitish FMR label. In early 2010 drummer Willi Kellers replaced Rudi Fischerlehner. Since 2008 reknowned trombonist Johannes Bauer is a frequent guest with the trio, augmenting GRID MESH to a quartett since 2010. Festival appearances include Jazz & More Sibiu, Jazzfest Nordhausen and Hurta Cordel Madrid.

Andreas Willers Since his 1981 solo debut on Berlin's FMP label Andreas Willers has founded a reputation as an exceptional guitarist with a rich stylistic background and impressive technical and tonal abilities that are carried by a great instinct for form and emotional power. He has worked with international greats like Paul Bley, Louis Sclavis, David Murray, Dominique Pifarély, Gerry Hemingway or Jim Black as well as with known figures of the scene in Berlin like Gebhard Ullmann, Johannes Bauer and Matthias Schubert. As a composer, bandleader, soloist and sideman Willers is represented on over 35 releases on labels like Enja and Leo Records. Studied electric guitar and composition in Los Angeles and Hamburg, taught jazz guitar at the HfM Hanns Eisler in Berlin. Numerous awards, festival appearences and tours throughout the world.

Frank Paul Schubert Saxophonist Frank Paul Schubert lives in Berlin since 1999. From the early 90s on he has been present on numerous festivals. His musical orientation stretches from Contemporary Jazz and Improvised Chamber Music, e.g. in Duo with pianist Antonis Anissegos (CD: "Phoobsering" 2005) to the abstract soundscapes of GRID MESH. Since 2006 he is working with drummer Guenter Baby Sommer (CD: "HIC SUNT LEONES" 2007; "Hic Sunt Leones's power and finesse make it album of the year material.", The Wire) as well as collaborating with Johannes Bauer, Tony Buck, Chris Dahlgren, Tobias Delius, Willi Kellers, Jan Klare, Olaf Rupp, Helmut "Joe" Sachse, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Harri Sjöström, Clayton Thomas etc. Tours led him in the US, Canada, the UK, France, Italy, Austria, Rumania, Poland etc.

Willi Kellers studied music at the universities in Münster and Detmold, working as a composer for theatre music for the stages in Bochum, Köln, Hamburg, Basel and Vienna. Works in a duo with Peter Brötzmann since 1980, also led his own Workshop Band. Has performed with a lot of well-known figures of the European Free Jazz movement like Willem Breuker, Fred Frith, Harry Miller, Tony Oxley, Frank Wright, Phil Minton, Keith and Julie Tippetts, Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky and Barre Phillips. Traveled in most European countries, the USA, China and Sibiria.

Johannes Bauer born 1954 in Halle/Saale, East Germany, studied music in Berlin. Since 1979 he is an free-lanced improvisor and in the 80ies he has been part of the jazz avandgarde of the German Democratic Republic. Today, he is confirmly rooted in the network of european improvised music. His own projects include the Trio AUS, Futch, iTi, Doppelmoppel. He is also member of the Globe Unity Orchestra, Barry Guy New Orchestra, London Jazz Composers Orchestra, Peter Brötzmann's Chicago Tentett and performed with Cecil Taylor, Fred van Hove, Derek Bailey a.m.o. Johannes Bauer lives in Berlin."-Grid Mesh Website

"The musicians collaborate in the expansion of extraordinary concepts through their understanding of contemporary jazz language. The result is an astonishing, consummate and resonant contour of modern-day, musical inventiveness and despite the individual, highly accomplished technical skills of the artists, it is also a master-class in ensemble playing."-Kent Cheetham, Jazz Views
