"Blurring the lines between electronic and acoustic music, as well as composition versus improvisation, NCAT is an unique quartet consisting of an improvising trio whose music has been mutated and structured in post-production by its fourth member. The bulk of the musical material on this LP was recording at STEIM in Amsterdam, during a residency of cellist/vocalist Audrey Chen, violinist/vocalist C. Spencer Yeh, and trumpet player Nate Wooley. After sifting through the collected recordings from the week, the trio sent selected pieces off to Todd Carter of TV Pow for mixing and mastering. What they received a few weeks later was a music totally transformed, as Carter had taken the piece and reconfigured them into stunning works of electro-acoustic composition.
Nate Wooley was born in 1974 in Clatskanie, Oregon. He began playing trumpet professionally with his father, a big bandsaxophonist,attheageof13. NatemovedtoNew York in 2001, and has since become one of the most in- demand trumpet players in the burgeoning Brooklyn jazz, improv, noise, andnewmusicscenes. Hehasperformed regularly with such icons as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, and Yoshi Wada, as well as being a collaborator with some of the brightest lights of his generation like Chris Corsano, C. Spencer Yeh, Peter Evans, and Mary Halvorson.
Audrey Chen is a Chinese-American musician who was born into a family of material scientists, doctors and engineers, outside of Chicago in 1976. Parting ways with the family convention, she turned to the cello at age 8 and voice at 11. After years of classical and conservatory training in both instruments, with a resulting specialization in early and new music, she parted ways again in 2003 to begin new negotiations with sound in order to discover a more individually honest aesthetic.
Now, using the cello, voice and analog electronics, Chen's work delves deeply into her own version of narrative and non-linearstorytelling. Alargecomponentofhermusic is improvised and her approach to this is extremely personal and visceral. Her playing explores the combination and layering of a homemade analog synthesizer, preparations and traditional and extended techniques in both the voice and cello. She works to join these elements into a singular ecstatic personal language.
Her current projects include: SOLO cello, voice and analog electronics, her duo entitled KAMAMA, with drummer Luca Marini and a duo acoustic voice project with Phil Minton. New upcoming projects include work with the German artist, John Bock and with the widely acclaimed Kronos Quartet.
Chen has performed in Europe, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, China, Japan, Taiwan, Brazil, Canada and the USA. In 2011, in addition to her performances, she was awarded the prestigious Mary Sawyers Baker Prize, an award that was established to support individual artists living, and working in Maryland. She has now recently relocated to Berlin, Germany from Baltimore, MD USA and continues to maintain an active international touring schedule.C. Spencer Yeh is recognized for his interdisciplinary activities and collaborations as an artist, composer, and improviser, as well as his music project Burning Star Core. Recent recorded works include Ambient (with Robert Piotrowicz), 1975, and Transitions, under the CS Yeh moniker. Yeh also volunteers as a trailer editor and programmer for Spectacle Theater in Williamsburg, Brooklyn."-Monotype
