Differential Equation: a mathematical formula to help determine the behavior of a complex system and to attempt to explain the functions of that system.

"Well, the way I see it after reading the actual definition of a differential equation is that it's an attempt to define something that really can't be defined. This is basically the definition of improvised music, or at leasat the act of musical improvisation as I see it. Assembling a group of musicians from diverse backgrounds and music experiences and asking them to spontaneously compose is always a serious challenge. The process can either be highly rewarding or deeply frustrating at the end of each attempt. There are no real ground rules or road map, no set formula to follow. It's all about listening and responding both technically and emotionally if possible. Very little planning can be discussed or considered beforehand. The lineup, which features myself and long time partners in angularity, Kit Demos and John McLellan, and here also joined by Italian alto saxophonist Fabio Delvo, brought a comfortable intensity to the session, which in the end we all felt pleasantly surprised and satisfied with. Artist Biographies:

"John McLellan (1968 - October 29, 2014). An extraordinary musician; a truly original drummer and improviser in a language of rhythmic orchestration and dynamics, counterpoint in ideas, space, touch, spirit... The recent passing of this dear friend and close associate of ours had a most profound affect on us all. The cause of his death was Mesothelioma. I saw him for the last time on October 26th at Tuft's Hospital in Boston. I was first introduced to Johnny through violist Mat Maneri back in 2004. They already had a rapport going back many years, and a closely related family style of improvisation which can only really be thoroughly understood through aural transmission, listening and first-hand experience, rehearsals... Around the same time I also formed a quartet with Johnny, saxophonist Jonathan Moritz and Eivind Opsvik we called THE UP. It all made a very deep impact on my development as an improviser, and will continue to. For the sake of this work and dedication, I felt it necessary to organize the documentation I have of this history, starting from the beginning."
