Artist Biographies:

"Born Lucerne, 1952; saxophones, composer.

Urs Leimgruber has been active for many years in the areas of contemporary improvisation, composition, jazz and new music. One of his earliest associations was as a member of the electric jazz/free music group 'Om' with Christy Doran, Fredy Studer and Bobby Burri, and he later formed the 'Reflexionen' quartet with Don Friedman and Bobby Burri in New York. More recently, his own projects have included 'Ensemble Bleu', 'Xylem', e_a.sonata 02 with the ARTE saxophone quartet, as well as a long association with Fritz Hauser: as a duo with the ongoing Music for saxophone and percussion; in the Leimgruber/Roidinger/Hauser trio; a trio with Joëlle Léandre; and a trio with Marilyn Crispell. He later formed the 'quartet noir' with Marilyn Crispell, Joëlle Léandre and Fritz Hauser, a trio with Jacques Demierre and Barre Phillips and the group SIX with Jacques Demierre, Isabelle Duthoit, Charlotte Hug, Dorothea Schürch and Thomas Lehn. Urs Leimgruber has also performed extensively as a solo artist and has been involved in mixed media presentations, providing music for dance, radio plays and film.

Urs Leimgruber has undertaken concert tours in Western and Eastern Europe, USA, Canada, South America and Japan, and appeared at concerts and on recordings with such musicians as Steve Lacy, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, Joe McPhee, Lauren Newton, Michel Doneda, Keith Rowe, Günter Christmann, Sunny Murray and Günter Müller among many others."

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Swiss-born saxophonist (he plays virtually all of them) Urs Leimgruber has long been a fixture on the European new music, jazz, and free improvisation scenes. Leimgruber has formal training in both classical music and jazz, and began his tenure as a member of the electric, free improv jazz group Om in the 1970s with drummer Fredy Studer, Christy Doran, and Bobby Burri; he later moved to New York with Burri to form and record with their Refelexionen Quartet which, ironically enough, recorded their finest moments at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1987.

Leimgruber careens through the free jazz and new music and improv boroughs with startling ease; his long association with drummer and percussionist Fritz Hauser has run the gamut from improvised duets to performing with pianist Irène Schweizer and Steve Lacy. The most satisfying and even revelatory groups that he and Hauser have been involved in, however, are two trios with bassist extraordinaire Joëlle Léandre and another with pianist Marilyn Crispell. In addition to these groups, Leimgruber has also been a featured guest on recordings by Louis Sclavis, Hans Koch, Pauline Oliveros, Tim Berne, Joe McPhee, and Trilok Gurtu, just to name a few. Leimgruber has issued a number of solo saxophone recordings as well, which are, in the same way Anthony Braxton's were in the late '60s and early '70s, groundbreaking, emotionally expressive, and critically brilliant.

[From] 1988, Leimgruber ... lived in Paris, a place he [used] as a pivot point for his many endeavors. In the '90s and 2000s, he has fronted the LSM Trio with François Moutin and Patrick Scheyder, and appeared in performances of the works of composers Maria De Alvear, Mani Planzer, and Edu Haubensak. His touring throughout Western Europe, the United States, South America, and Canada is near constant; somehow he finds the time to teach theory courses and run improvisation workshops at a number of universities around the world."-Thom Jurek, All Music Guide

"Roger Turner grew up amongst the Canterbury musical life of the 1960's with a strong jazz foundation. Since 1974, work has been concentrated on exploring a more personal percussion language through the processes of improvisation.

Solo work, collaborations with experimental rock musics & open - form song, extensive work with dance, film and visual art, involvements in numerous jazz-based ensembles, & workshop residencies have formed part of that development.

Mostly, however, the pleasures and discoveries have been in music-making with many of the finest European and international musicians in ad-hoc and group improvising collaborations including Alan Silva, Cecil Taylor, Henry Grimes, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Keith Rowe, Toshinori Kondo, Irene Schweitzer, Joelle Leandre..."-www.roger-turner.com
