Black Music Disaster

Black Music Disaster (Thirsty Ear)
Label: Thirsty Ear
Released in: USA

"Hailing from both the UK and US, Black Music Disaster is a super indie group featuring Spiritualized's legendary J Spaceman, Spring Heel Jack's multi-instrumental genius John Coxon, acclaimed jazz icon Matthew Shipp and drummer Steve Noble. The pace is set with the pulsating Farfisa organ, compli- mented by dueling psychedelic guitars and punctuated with explosive drums. At times hypnotic, yet rapidly moving with wide dynamic sweeps, this highly unique sonic experience is unmatched in its ultimate musical journey.

Given these great musicians span such diverse musical backgrounds the brilliance of this music is how the genre differences just melt away. As to the name, Matthew Shipp provides the keys to its origin:

"William Parker had mentioned to me about a negative review of a concert William had done with Cecil Taylor and Anthony Braxton in Italy in which the reviewer referred to the concert as a ''black arts disaster''. Everyone thought that was funny and by the time the story got around through Chinese whispers it had changed to black music disaster--at which time we all looked at each other and said that is a great name for a CD."

So sit back and be prepared to be transported to another world."-Thirsty Ear

"Matthew Shipp was born December 7, 1960 in Wilmington, Delaware. He started piano at 5 years old with the regular piano lessons most kids have experienced. He fell in love with jazz at 12 years old. After moving to New York in 1984 he quickly became one of the leading lights in the New York jazz scene. He was a sideman in the David S. Ware quartet and also for Roscoe Mitchell's Note Factory before making the decision to concentrate on his own music.

Mr Shipp has reached the holy grail of jazz in that he possesses a unique style on his instrument that is all of his own- and he's one of the few in jazz that can say so. Mr. Shipp has recorded a lot of albums with many labels but his 2 most enduring relationships have been with two labels. In the 1990s he recorded a number of chamber jazz cds with Hatology, a group of cds that charted a new course for jazz that, to this day, the jazz world has not realized. In the 2000s Mr Shipp has been curator and director of the label Thirsty Ear's "Blue Series" and has also recorded for them. In this collection of recordings he has generated a whole body of work that is visionary, far reaching and many faceted."

"Steve Noble is London's leading drummer, a fearless and constantly inventive improviser whose super-precise, ultra-propulsive and hyper-detailed playing has galvanized encounters with Derek Bailey, Matthew Shipp, Ishmael Wadada Leo Smith, Stephen O'Malley, Joe McPhee, Alex Ward, Rhodri Davies and many, many more.

In the early eighties, Noble played with the Nigerian master drummer Elkan Ogunde, Rip Rig and Panic, Brion Gysin and the Bow Gamelan Ensemble, before going on to work with the pianist Alex Maguire and with Derek Bailey (including Company Weeks 1987, 89 and 90). He was featured in the Bailey's excellent TV series on Improvisation for Channel 4 based on his book 'Improvisation; its nature and practise'. He has toured and performed throughout Europe, Africa and America and currently leads the groups N.E.W (with John Edwards and Alex Ward) and DECOY (with John Edwards and Alexander Hawkins)."
