"It was Plato who wrote, "When the mode of the music changes, the walls of the city will tremble," but then, Plato lived, by our standards, in a very small city, one that - with its distinguished plays, music and mysteries - we might readily confuse with a theatre, a concert hall, a place of worship, a site less lived-in than designated for ritualized performances, a place that might mark borderlines, whether between the old mode and the new, the sacred and profane, the place before and after bells, a place isolated within a larger building, like a minimalist's large-scale appropriation of Russian nesting dolls, like this performance in the town of Montemor-o-Novo some 300 miles south of Montemor-o-Velho, that is, "the old main hill," and some hundreds of miles north-west from that other room in the midst of which has been placed (box-like) a cathedral, a kind of Tennessee jar ("round it was, upon a hill"), but here in the Cine-Theatre Curvo-Semedo the performance is so intimate the theatre itself must be excluded and a new relationship installed, the audience instead gathered on stage with the musicians and the curtain then drawn to create a "black box" effect, the ceiling exceedingly high, the air cold, the bells distant, the fabula unfolding from the instruments in a way that can be neither translated nor precisely misunderstood (various secret passages present themselves; connections, routings are magnified: the trumpet's brass tubes are moving granaries; the wound wires of guitar and viola grow train-tracks in space; minutiae mask themselves and slither seductively in computer circuitry), but later, when the fabula reaches its inevitable conclusion, we all - audience, musicians, and shared air alike - discover the black box and the folds of its cloth walls no longer there, and that we can't leave, that we can never find ourselves outside of them."-Stuart Broomer

"Axel Dörner (born 26 April 1964 in Cologne, Germany) is a German jazz musician (trumpet and piano) and composer.
Dörner studied piano in the Dutch town Arnhem (1988-89) and at the Music Academy in Cologne (1989-1996). From 1991 he studied trumpet with Malte Burba, and during his studies he collaborated with trumpeter Bruno Light in the "The Street Fighters Duo". At this time he also joined the ensembles "The Street Fighters Quartet" and "The Street Fighters Double Quartet" together with Matthias Schubert, Bruno Leicht, and Claudio Puntin. In addition the "Axel Dörner Quartet" was initiated (with Frank Gratkowski, Hans Schneider and Martin Blume). With saxophonist Matthias Petzold. he participated on the albums Lifelines and Psalmen Und Lobgesänge.
Dörner has resided in Berlin since 1994, and occurs in the most diverse settings like "The London Jazz Composers Orchestra" and with "Hedros" (together with Mats Gustafsson, Günter Christmann, Barry Guy and others). Since then he has contributed on more than 50 album recordings.
Dörner is distinguished mainly by his versatility. He bouth play the more traditional Bebop, just like he fits in to classic Free Jazz or electronic music. He playd with Otomo Yoshihide at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 2005. Dörner play both solo concerts and collaborates with his trio "TOOT" (together with Phil Minton and Thomas Lehn) and "Die Anreicherung" with Christian Lillinger, Håvard Wiik and Jan Roder, and in Ken Vandermarks "Territory-Band". Dörner is an integral part of the Berlin scene of experimental new improvisational music. "He has been playing the violin for 30 years and in that time has played all genres of music ranging from contemporary music to free jazz and improvised music, live and in the studio.
His main interest shifted towards contemporary improvised and composed music.
The relationship with his instruments is focused in sonic and textural elements.
Electronic music was an early influence on his approach to violin playing, which challenges traditional romantic concepts of the violin/viola through use of preparations and micro tuning.
Active in different settings on the Portuguese scene for free improvised music, both as a collaborator and in leading his own groups.

"Abdul Moimême was born in Lisbon, in 1959, moving at an early age to New Mexico and later to Dublin, Ireland. He began studying the guitar at the age of 11, studying under various private teachers, in Madrid, Spain.
In 1979 he moved to Boston to study architecture, finally completing his degree at the University of Lisbon.
In the 90's he began studying the tenor saxophone with Patrick Brennan. In this period he became actively involved with Lisbon's improvised and alternative rock scenes, performing frequently with the Variable Geometry Orchestra since it's creation in 2003, as well as with various other local projects.
His main musical partners are from Lisbon and Porto, but he has also performed in public concerts with such artists as Gale Brand, George Haslam, Jon Raskin, Ken Filiano, Patrick Brennan, Steve Adams, and Wade Matthews.
In 1999 he started writing about jazz in various Portuguese publications and is currently a permanent collaborator of Jazz.pt magazine, and Publico newspaper, as a critic.

"Ricardo Guerreiro (Lisbon, 1975) is a composer who predominantly develops his activity in the field of computer music creation, mainly departing from his interest in the algorithmic description of sonic phenomenon and musical structuring. Over the last years he has been collaborating with different musicians in the composition of collaborative performance situations in diversified contexts. In the field of musicological research, he is interested in the fundamentally ontological character of Aesthetics, seen as a discipline that implies an evaluation of our approach to technique, i.e., how we relate to the means we have at our disposal, as well as the broad acting context, namely the cultural, social and physical spaces.
He holds a PhD in Music Informatics / Computer Music from the School of Arts of the Catholic University of Porto. Graduated in Composition by the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (2000) and in Electronic Music (2004) by the Conservatorio di Musica Benedetto Marcello di Venezia, Italy. In 2007, he obtained his degree in Musicology at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He attended several composition courses and seminars in Lisbon, Porto, Aveiro, Paris (IRCAM - '99), Darmstadt ('98 and 2000) and Venice, with names like Annette Vande Gorne, Chaya Czernowin, Curtis Roads, Emmanuel Nunes, François Bayle, Hans Zender, Helmut Lachenmann, Isabel Mundry, Julio Estrada, Mark André, Morton Subotnick and Salvatore Sciarrino, among others, as well as Giorgio Agamben's Aesthetics (2001) and Iconology (2004) semester seminars held at the Universities of Verona and Venice, respectively.
As a scholarship holder of the Italian Government he developed, between 2001 and 2002, a research project on the computer music in "Prometeo" by Luigi Nono, supervised by Prof. Alvise Vidolin and having as invited institutions the Center for Computational Sonology (CSC) of the University of Padua and the Luigi Nono Archive in Venice. Between 2004 and 2014 he created and directed the Laboratory of Sound and Composition for the course of Cinema / Motion Picture of Ar.Co (Center for Art and Visual Communication). He was professor (2010-2013) in the courses of Interactive Multimedia Production and Sound Design at the IPA (Instituto Politécnico de Estudos Autónomos). Since 2007, he has been collaborating as a trainer in both ETIC (Escola Técnica de Comunicação e Arte) and EPI (Escola Profissional de Imagem).
