"The continuous presence of the guitar creates the main axis for these improvisations that happened between 2007-2008. Different sound sources, from electronic sounds to the clarinet, and prepared piano interchange roles, swarm around and together with the guitar creating sonic and harmonic fields that oscillate between the spectral and the gestural.
Thanos Chrysakis' output consists of composition, performance, and installation. He was born in Athens in 1971, residing for the last ten years in the UK. His work has appeared on various independent labels, and events in various countries. He composes for electronics, acoustic instruments and environmental sounds, focusing on the structural and aesthetic capacity of sonic matter. His work "Inscape 5" was amongst the selected works at the International Competition de Musique et d'Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges 2005, in the category œuvre d'art sonore électroacoustique, while "Nekyomanteion" received an honorary mention at the 7th International Electroacoustic Competition Musica Viva in Lisbon. Some recent compositions include: A SCAR IN THE AIR (2008), "Threadshelters" for prepared piano + harpsichord (for Kate Ryder and Jane Chapman, 2007), "Frontal fusion" for oboe + clarinet (2008) and the short piece "Passage Dangereux" for prepared and toy piano, soundscape + video(for Kate Ryder, 2008). James O' Sullivan
James O'Sullivan is a London-based electric guitar player and cellist. He has performed in numerous groupings of musicians, many of whom he met through Eddie Prevost's weekly improvisational workshop. In addition, he is the founder, alongside longtime friend and collaborator David Hurn, of Four Seasons Television, which explores the relationship between improvisation, composition, recording and performance. His activities span the two poles from free improvisation to more 'composed' song forms, and he has collaborated with songwriters, improvisors, improvising songwriters and other permutations of these elements in an attempt to unpack ideas of terms such as 'free', 'composed', 'technique', 'melody', 'noise', 'rhythm' and 'improvise'.
Darío Bernal-Villegas is a composer, improviser and drummer from Mexico City. Improvisation has been an essential part in his work as composer and performer. Many of his pieces deal with improvisation, as his aim is to create an intense, creative interaction between the performer and the score; in other words, creating the conditions for a more intense dialogue between the performer and the composer. As an improviser, he has worked with musicians such as Raul Tudon (Tambuco Percussion Ensemble of Mexico) Wade Matthews (US, Spain) and is co-founder of the improvising percussion ensemble 'Huachimamba' with the Mexican percussionists Tonatiuh Avila and Enrique Castro. Recently, he has been working in different ensembles and recording projects with London based musicians, such as Thanos Chrysakis, Sebastian Lexer, Oli Mayne, David Plans Casals, amongst others. Most of these projects explore improvisation and live electronics.
Oli Mayne is an experimental vibraphone and analogue synthesiser player, with an emphasis on intense, physical performances. Currently based in Budapest, he first encountered improvisation in a duo with a Brazilian pianist whilst living in Nottingham, England, but got more seriously involved in the experimental side of things after moving to London, attending the weekly improvisation workshops run by Eddie Prevost of legendary improvisation group AMM. He has appeared at various London improvisation events and venues, including the Evan Parker/ Eddie Prevost/ Martin Davidson run 'Freedom of the city' festival, nights put on by Adam Bohman/ Bohman Brothers and the Society for Promotion of New Music, and venues such as Café Oto and 'Interlace' at Goldsmiths College; he has also performed in Nottingham, Brighton and Birmingham. He also plays bass and percussion; other musical activities include the experimental jazz/ rock band Astrakan, space rock band Litmus, and classically-orientated percussion quartet Brake Drum Assembly.
Jerry Wigens is an improviser and composer who plays guitar and clarinet. Although based in London, he has performed extensively in the UK and in Switzerland, Germany and Hungary. His interest in improvisation started at an early age and he attended John Stevens' workshop for a time in the mid-1970s. Since then he has worked in a number of settings including rock and jazz, world music and contemporary composition. He has studied with Roger Redgate and participates in Eddie Prevost's workshop sessions which he has occasionally convened. Apart from playing clarinet with 9!, Tetrás and in various ad hoc groupings, he also plays guitar in a trio with Paul May and Philp Somervell and in the improvising rock band Astrakan."-Aural Terrains
