With a background in both pop playing and classical composition, Gary Smith has released close to twenty albums and worked with such luminaries as Shoji Hano, Bill Fay, Rhys Chatham, John Stevens, Hugh Hopper and aufgehoben no process. His guitar playing is consistently building up a formidable vocabulary of technique. Without the use of effects pedals, overdubs or 'studio trickery' Smith's current performances are a revelation of gestural manipulation. The guitar is palmed, stroked, and smothered in search of new sounds. Smith's playing is a looping, graceful expression of energy, ideas and sheer joy. His solo recordings touch many spheres of reference: laptop's fascination with glitch music but from a live perspective; the muffled and trapped strings echo prepared piano as rough pressured rhythms are layered over wandering multiple glissandi. In this exciting project Siji presents a double cd release featuring a series of Gary Smith's incendiary solo recordings coupled with treatments, interpretations and re-imaginings."-Siji

Artist Biographies:

"Steve Roden is an American sound and visual artist, who pioneered the lowercase style of music; where quiet, usually unheard, sounds are amplified to form complex and rich soundscapes. His discography includes Forms of Paper, which was commissioned by the Los Angeles public library.

In 2013 Steve Roden's work was featured in a two-person exhibition with Jenny Perlin at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Cleveland, OH and in a solo exhibition at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE), Los Angeles, CA. In 2010, a mid-career survey of Roden's work was presented at the Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena, CA, curated by Howard Fox. Solo exhibitions include the Creative Media Center, City University of Hong Kong; the Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont, CA; the Chinati Foundation, Marfa; the Henry Art Museum, Seattle; the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), Athens; the San Francisco Art Institute; the Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and Science; the Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery at Art Center College of Design, Pasadena; the Tang Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs; and the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, among others.

"Elliott Sharp is an American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and performer.

A central figure in the avant-garde and experimental music scene in New York City for over 30 years, Elliott Sharp has released over eighty-five recordings ranging from orchestral music to blues, jazz, noise, no wave rock, and techno music. He leads the projects Carbon and Orchestra Carbon, Tectonics, and Terraplane and has pioneered ways of applying fractal geometry, chaos theory, and genetic metaphors to musical composition and interaction.

"Paulo Raposo (b 1967) is a sound and media artist based in Lisbon, Portugal. Born in 1967, after studies of philosophy and cinema in Lisbon, he has been working in the medium of live electronic and computer sound, performing, recording and exhibiting works in France, Germany, UK, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Baltic States and United States. His work explores the inter-relationships and displacements between digital process and architectural spaces, using computer and custom-built software to create abstract and delicate soundscapes. Since the late nineties, he started also exploring intersections between sound and image, taking advantage of the digital medium real-time possibilities, both in solo performances and collaborative work. Raposo performed and colaborated with numerous artists, including Janek Schaefer, Jason Kahn, Kaffe Mathews, Marc Behrens, Jgrzinich, Zbigniew Karkowski, Matt Rogalski, Carlos Santos, Carlos Zíngaro, Christopher Murphy, Koji Asano, Sara Kolster, among others."
