Mezei Szilárd was born in Senta, Vojvodina, Yugoslavia in 1974 as a member of Hungarian minority in the multiethnic region Vojvodina.  Classically trained and well versed in improvisation, his orchestra plays a contemporary improvised music of his own compositions which are interested in the relationship beetwen improvisation, composition and authentic folk music. Szilárd also plays Hungarian authentic folk music on authentic instruments koboz and oud.

As a violinist, violist, double bass player and composer he's held concerts in various formations from duo to nonett across Europe, including the Ring Ring Festival, 2002, 1991 Leverkusener Jazz Tage, Charta Minimumia Festival 2000, &c. As a performer and participant he has worked with Tim Hodgkinson in Budapest, and played with musicians/improvisers like Matthias Schubert, Tamás Geröly, Róbert Benk_, György  Szabados, Mihály Dresch, Michael Hornstein, Tim Hodgkinson. His writings about music were published in many of periodicals in Yugoslavia and Hungary. He currently has two CDs available on the Leo label.
