"The title of this 51 minute improvisation, recorded during the 2006 Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, refers to the weather buffeting and rattling the windows of the church where the gig took place. The trio lapse into silence in several places, which must have been particularly effective 'live', as the sounds generated by the wind outside would have been even more noticeable.
The resultant performance mediates between art and nature, human and natural agencies, adding an extra level of engagement. At the 'micro' end of the improvising spectrum, Butcher is associated with a virtuosic ability to produce sound from the saxophone by every conceivable means: a forensic, almost obsessive exploration of every possible effect, like pad-popping, and slapping, sucking and kissing sounds. But at the 'macro' level, he has a preoccupation with using his instruments to test and exploit the acoustic characteristics of the performance space, which is perhaps more interesting. All three musicians travel both these roads, but there are other approaches too, including each of them holding long tones, so that the 'beat' of the sound becomes more prominent as the frequencies merge and collide. For me the test of good music is that, regardless of its degree of abstraction, it pleases and holds the attention moment to moment while providing a deeper satisfaction through a - perhaps illusory - sense of structure. "The work of clarinetist Xavier Charles ranges from noise to electro-acoustic via sound poetry. He has played in numerous new music festivals in France and abroad. In his work with groups and collectives, he has also collaborated with Martin Tetrault, The Ex, Ingar Zach, Pierre Berthet, Axel Dörner, Ivar Grideland, John Butcher, Jacques Di Donato, Frédéric Le Junter, Otomo Yoshihide, Getachew Mekuria, Christian Wallumrod, Emmanuelle Pellegrini, Lionel Marchetti, Jean-Philippe Gross, Michel Doneda and Frédéric Blondy. Different collectifs (Dans Les Arbres, Ouie-Dire, ONCEIM, No Spaguettitti Edition, Chris Burn Ensemble, Atmosphérique). Currently his musical research ranges from performance on the clarinet to the installation of vibrating speakers, at the edge of improvised music, noisy rock and electro-acoustic sound. "Axel Dörner (born 26 April 1964 in Cologne, Germany) is a German jazz musician (trumpet and piano) and composer.
Dörner studied piano in the Dutch town Arnhem (1988-89) and at the Music Academy in Cologne (1989-1996). From 1991 he studied trumpet with Malte Burba, and during his studies he collaborated with trumpeter Bruno Light in the "The Street Fighters Duo". At this time he also joined the ensembles "The Street Fighters Quartet" and "The Street Fighters Double Quartet" together with Matthias Schubert, Bruno Leicht, and Claudio Puntin. In addition the "Axel Dörner Quartet" was initiated (with Frank Gratkowski, Hans Schneider and Martin Blume). With saxophonist Matthias Petzold. he participated on the albums Lifelines and Psalmen Und Lobgesänge.
Dörner has resided in Berlin since 1994, and occurs in the most diverse settings like "The London Jazz Composers Orchestra" and with "Hedros" (together with Mats Gustafsson, Günter Christmann, Barry Guy and others). Since then he has contributed on more than 50 album recordings.
Dörner is distinguished mainly by his versatility. He bouth play the more traditional Bebop, just like he fits in to classic Free Jazz or electronic music. He playd with Otomo Yoshihide at the Donaueschinger Musiktage in 2005. Dörner play both solo concerts and collaborates with his trio "TOOT" (together with Phil Minton and Thomas Lehn) and "Die Anreicherung" with Christian Lillinger, Håvard Wiik and Jan Roder, and in Ken Vandermarks "Territory-Band". Dörner is an integral part of the Berlin scene of experimental new improvisational music.
