Butcher, John / Dylan van der Schyff: Points, Snags and Windings (Meniscus)
Label: Meniscus
Released in: USA

"This is the tenth release from the small, independent, and provocative Meniscus Records label, which was founded by critic Jon Morgan to feature solo and duo recordings by outstanding avant-garde improvisational talent largely overlooked by the mainstream media. Saxophonist John Butcher and percussionist Dylan Van Der Schyff have recorded elsewhere extensively, both (but especially Butcher) attracting a devoted following. Based solely on the evidence of this delightfully stimulating recording, it is easy to see why. The saxophonist, whether on tenor or soprano, has developed new ways of playing his instruments, with split tones, ragged rhythms, overtones, multi-phonics, and assorted other extraordinary techniques. Butcher's sculptures are imbued with sounds of surprise, taking the listener down paths he (or she) may not have expected. Significantly, they are usually (but not always) accessible listening, sometimes requiring intense concentration. Van Der Schyff is a near-perfectpartner, as he has totally absorbed the free improvisational aesthetic, which, by the time of this release, had emerged, ironically, as an identifiable style. The percussionist listens very closely to the saxophonist's changes in directions, and alternatively leads, duels, or complements his constructs, resulting in a joint vision that transcends individual contributions. While at first, and particularly to the uncultured ear, these tracks may sound like grating noise, the patient and experienced listener should find much to savor."-Steve Loewy,
