Curtis Mayfield, a vital element of the civil rights movement, interpreted in music and words by William Parker, Amiri Baraka and an extremely well balanced band.

Parker, William
The Inside Songs Of Curtis Mayfield - Live in Rome

Label: RAI Trade
Country: Italy

"A variation on Parker's mid-2000s performing quartet, adding Dave Burrell on piano, Sabir Mateen and Darryl Foster on reeds (replacing Rob Brown) and with Leena Conquest and Amiri Braka vocalising - Parker, Drake and Barnes remain. An altogether earthier ensemble - Foster has sometimes seemed off the pace in the Little Huey context, but much more at home in the free/soul hinterland here. A good contrast between Mateen's more abstract and volatile style versus Foster's more grounded approach. A similar contrast with the vocalists - Conquest the "schooled" playing against Baraka's declamatory ranting (I really don't care for the newer-smoother Baraka, much more convinced by old-school Leroi Jones).[...]"-FreeJazz.org
