4Walls
Which Side Are You On

Label: Orkhestra
Country: The Netherlands

"For their album 4Walls decided not to record on tape, but straight from the liveroom into protools on 96.000Khz. The eleven songs show a fantastic range of diversity. Less improvisations than in the past though still the songs are atmospheric and mysterious. Melodies are pleasantly sweet, noise is oppressive and the band's free-expression is beautifully lush. Bass-player Luc Ex, famous for his stubbornness in rhythm, even brings in grooves in the typical 4Walls kitchen. Then drummer Michael Vatcher can easily be seen as the brother of Joey Baron while piano-player Veryan Weston gives their music brilliant melodies, a very useful thing in the development of this delicate material. 4Walls is more than ever inimitable. Omnipresent and fabulous singer Phil Minton is characteristic in many of the poem-based tracks. Four pieces of the late poet Paul Haines are transformed into strong compositions. Plus two poems written by Ho Chi Minh when he was in jail. And a piece based on an e-mail dialogue between writer Lou Glanfield and the KKK-website. And then there's a wonderful stripped down version of Jacques Brel's "Ces Gens-la", an impression on Robert Schumann's "Im Rhein" and the American traditional "Which Side Are You On"."-4Walls
