Baghdassarians / Baltschun / Beins
008

Label: Absinth Records
Country: Germany

"The only slightly long title translates, I'm informed, to "For stable support of a body, it is necessary to have three supporting points that shall not lie in a straight line." Three points, check. Not in a straight line, check. Stable? As much as needed. Beins continues to demonstrate his outstanding capacity to merge perfectly with electronics, here Baltshun's sampler and Baghdassarians' reotrop which I'm assuming is the same as a rheotrope, defined as a device for reversing the flow of electric current; if this is the sound of current reversed, I'm all for it. Two tracks, the first taking off on that initial drone and maintaining its feel over 23 minutes while sliding into fascinating and complex adjacent territories. Generally dark, even subterranean in temperament, it possesses a hurtling quality, a racing forward of matter, sometimes liquid, sometimes gaseous, sometimes electric. Midway through, it splinters into a shower of insectile whines and pings and enters a wonderful, chugging kind of area, a not-so-stagnant pool of sorts, where various sonic elements ricochet off of and splat into each other. A blockage is breached and the activity streams down a different, more hollowly echoing channel. Toward the end, you almost get the impression of sounds seeping in from the "outside" as though you're on the other side of a wall separating you from some vast amusement center (there's a little bit of a Riley-esque loopy organ component here). It's a beautiful, absolutely captivating piece. The second track is an airier affair, fluttering into existence on a cloud of wavering sine-y tones, bowed metal and light rattles. It hovers in place, dragonfly-like, darting within a tightly defined sector for several minutes until a deep tremor, like wind buffeting one's eardrums, pushes it aside and takes its place, supplemented by objects beings dragged across drumheads. An urgent siren knifes through, a violent sandstorm rages, a lone drum thuds; it's over. Very strong."-Brian Olewnick, Bagatellen
