Davies, Angharad / Rie Nakajima / Alice Purton: Dethick <i>[Used Item]</i> (Another Timbre)

Three free improvising women--Angharad Davies, Rie Nakajima, and Alice Purton--met in the church in the tiny hamlet of Dethick, near Matlock, Derbyshire, over the course of two days developing the ten pieces of this album using an impressive set of stringed and percussive instruments, objects, and mysterious sources to create these fascinating sonic evocations.

Artist Biographies:

"Angharad Davies is a violinist, one at ease in both improvising and composition, with a wide discography as part of varied range of ensembles and groups. She's a specialist in the art of 'preparing' her violin, adding objects or materials to it to extend its sound making properties. Her sensitivity to the sonic possibilities of musical situations and attentiveness to their shape and direction make her one of contemporary music's most fascinating figures. 2015 has seen her being commissioned for a new work at the Counterflows Festival, Glasgow and premiering Eliane Radigue's new solo for violin, Occam XXI at the El Nicho Festival, Mexico.

She's performed at, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, BBC Proms, Music We'd Like to Hear's concert series, is an associate artist at Cafe Oto, is a member of Apartment House, Cranc and Common Objects, been artist in residence at Q-02, and played live with Tony Conrad in the Turbine Room at the Tate Modern. Other collaborations have featured the likes of John Butcher, Daniela Cascella, Rhodri Davies, Julia Eckhardt , Kazuko Hohki, Roberta Jean, Lina Lapelyte, Dominic Lash, Tisha Mukarji, Andrea Neumann, Rie Nakajima, Tim Parkinson, J.G.Thirlwell, Stefan Thut, Paul Whitty, Manfred Werder, Birgit Ulher, Taku Unami and she's released records on Absinth Records, Another Timbre, Potlatch and Confrontrecords."

"Rie Nakajima is a Japanese artist working with installations and performances that produce sound. Her works are most often composed in direct response to unique architectural spaces using a combination of kinetic devices and found objects. She has exhibited and performed widely both in the UK and overseas and has produced 'Sculpture' with David Toop since 2013. With Keiko Yamamoto she has a music project 'O YAMA O' which explores music with no genre. She also has a collaborative project 'Dead Plants/Living Objects' with Pierre Berthet. She has recently had her first major solo exhibition at IKON Gallery in Birmingham."

"Alice Purton is a London-based cellist, who is much in demand as a chamber musician, contemporary music performer and improviser. Alice completed her Masters in Performance at the Royal College of Music in 2010, where she was taught by Melissa Phelps. Before this Alice studied with Karine Georgian and Raphael Wallfisch whilst she completed the prestigious Joint Course between the Royal Northern College of Music and the University of Manchester. Alice has also studied with Anssi Karttunen at the Acanthes Academie, and with Lucas Fels as part of the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme.

Alongside her work with Distractfold, Alice is also a member of Trio Atem, a Manchester-based ensemble who have been commissioning works for cello, voice and flute since 2007. Alice also appears regularly with Plus Minus Ensemble, and is the cellist with the Chagall Piano Quartet, who were recent finalists in the St. Martin-in-the-Fields chamber music competition. In 2015 she was invited to perform piano trios with Mark Knoop and Aisha Orazbayeva in the Music We'd Like To Hear series.

Alice appears on 'The Music of Making Strange', a 2013 Carrier Records portrait of composer Alex Hills, and on 'pneuma', a 2014 collection of Martin Iddon's works for Another Timbre."

"An interesting trio combining a variety of instrumental practices meet in an old church in Dethick (Derbyshire) and develop ten works in two days, and this is the result. On the latest, Dethick by Welsh improvisational violinist Angharad Davies, Japanese installation/electronic artist Rie Nakajima and London-based cellist Alice Purton a myriad of patterns miraculously emerge, some tangible, others not so much.

Here we have three women, resolute in their individual approach, veering into new territory as then flex in sonic conversation that is at times brisk, and at other moments minimal and perplexing. The incredible bowing on One is like a harrowing night at sea, the boat is rocking. I'm particularly interested in the resonance offered by marbles or some spherical entity on the floor or within bowls that bounces as the faintest strings are plucked throughout the lowercase "Different Formation". The singular bell tone at the very end is perfect punctuation as the ear moves towards Finetuning.

Here we have a series of crying string, reach out, breaths in between. The way these three harmonize weaves in and around the center, out to the edges and then surprises with cello that sounds like a plane flying overhead, and raspy percussion. And once "Next Wet Metal" flows into the buzzing "Another One" there's a sudden stillness being distilled. In these singular string tones not only can you hear a pin drop, but they are lines in mid air, cutting through the density and previously built tensions.

With all solid intentions there is an undercurrent of unrest, a pre-storm calm, on "Third Wet Metal", with its squeaks and low-flyer altitude. It prepares you for Unexpected Directions, and the remainder of this collection. And just when the gurgling jolts and shrill fragmentation start to present themselves this becomes the most abstract musique concrète mix. Through warbling thick nuances, these sonorities are on point and the atmosphere is dotted with quirky, microscopic intonations that fade in and out."-TJ Norris, Toneshift
