Chasse, Lorren: The Sodden Floor [CASSETTE + download] (Notice Recordings)

A mysterious four part work made from organic drone sources and field recordings, like the soundtrack to a dark dream interspersed with unrecognizable sound posts, from sound artist Loren Chasse (Jewelled Antler, Thuja, The Blithe Sons, The Child Readers).

descriptions, reviews, &c.

"Comprising pregnant field recordings, tense drone whispers, and wispy layers of texture, The Sodden Floor's dark superimpositions drift between momentary dread and almost childlike abstraction. They seem composed with an eye on cinema: sounds drift into focus and then cut or pan away; the resulting shifts constitute a dreamlike presence only sustainable within an ephemeral world, one documented with a half-awake awareness - leaving or coming - but always accepting the flittering yet immovable mise-en-scene aesthetic of non-existence."-Notice

"Loren Chasse is an American musician, sound artist, field recordist and teacher, most notable for his association with Jewelled Antler and his work with Thuja, The Blithe Sons, The Child Readers, Of and many others. He has been called "one of the most important international artists working in the areas of environment and sound." With Glenn Donaldson, he operates the Jewelled Antler record label, releasing works by themselves and others. In addition to his musical performances, Chasse has also performed at the Auckland International Film Festival, giving a "live cinema" light and sound performance using objects such as motors, clocks, strobe lights, branches, gravel, sand and leaves.

Chasse is also an educator in the San Francisco public school system, developing curriculum for children intended to enhance their perception of their sound environment. He credits this work with "helping him recognize the importance of listening in the moment." "-Wikipedia

"There you go: sometimes someone is quite for ages and then there are a few releases.Following his CD on Semper Florens (see Vital Weekly 1002) there is now a new cassetteby Loren Chasse - that man is quite productive! (Take that with a pinch of salt). Thecover here mentions that the four parts that make up 'The Sodden Floor' were recordedfrom 2011 to 2014 and they feature his great grandmother's melodeon; not that Irecognized it as such, I must admit. But maybe the airy, dreamy sound that we find isnot sound captured in an open space on a hissy cassette, is perhaps the processed soundof the melodeon (which is related to the accordion) played in that space, where, inthe meantime a score is being performed, which could read: "make small sounds as quietas possible". A squeak on the floorboards, a metal object, a bell, the window clappingin the wind, that sort of thing. Maybe there is more sound-processing going on that Iam not aware off, but I would think this is it. Just these few sparse sounds, playedin four different configurations and making up some beautiful poetic music. Once againI am reminded of the music of Small Cruel Party, and while that is no longer a goingconcern, Loren Chasse is the excellent alternative sound poet; poet sans words that is,but with richness in it is sparse use of sound. This is something that should find it'sway to more people, preferable on LP or CD."-Frans de Waard, Vital Weekly
