"Recordings, dating from 2010-2011 (Namouche Studios, Lisboa), by a Portuguese trio ended up last year as a CD-release for the Canadian Tour de Bras-label that concentrates on new and improvised music mainly of Canadian origin. I'm glad they made an exception with this charming release.
Cellist Miguel Mira is the veteran of the three. A multi-disciplinary artist who plays jazz and improvised for many years now. Joao Camoes (violin) is classically trained but discovered improvised music after moving to Lisboa. He is involved in numerous initiatives and has also his own projects around (Open Field String Trio, Nuovo Camerata, etc.). Pianist Pinheiro also has a background in classical music before entering improvised territories.
Their eight improvisations on this record are all of a subtle and delicate nature. You have to concentrate while listening to their excursions in order not to miss something. And that is a rewarding experience I can say. The use a wide range of dynamics and intensity. In their own words the music is "focused on the balance between a contrasting counterpoint, polyrhythms and fluid soundscapes". They use extended techniques in a relevant manner, as an integrated part of their musical vocabulary and grammar. Pinheiro is fantastic in pieces like 'Airfall'. "João Camões was born in Coimbra, Portugal, in 1983.
Classically trained, he studied viola in Conservatory of Music of Coimbra, under the guidance of João Ventura. After completing his studies in Civil Engineering, he moved to Lisbon where he discovered the creative and improvised music bustling local scene. There, he started to develop a set of extensive techniques that he mixes with classical ones, in a very physical approach to his instrument. Active in miscellaneous ensembles, his personal projects include: "Open Field string trio", with Marcelo dos Reis (guitar) and José Miguel Pereira (double-bass), "earnear", with Rodrigo Pinheiro (piano) and Miguel Mira (cello), João Camões & Kátia Sá, a duo with visual artist Kátia Sá and Nuova Camerata, with Carlos "Zíngaro" (violin), Ulrich Mitzlaff (cello), Miguel Leiria Pereira (double-bass) and Pedro Carneiro (marimba). Lately, together with his beloved wife, Joana Gomes, he started to compose and interpret music for theatre plays.

"Rodrigo Pinheiro was born in 1973 in Covilhã, a small town in the center of Portugal. He started learning the piano when he was five at the Conservatory of Covilhã and later at the Conservatory of Lisbon until he was eighteen. He soon got involved with the free Portuguese improvisation scene, having played with Américo Rodrigues, José Oliveira, Nuno Rebelo, Rodrigo Amado, Luís Desirat, Bruno Parrinha or Ernesto Rodrigues. Pinheiro's intuitive approach to improvisation and exploration of the piano timbres, using both classical and extensive techniques, makes his music energic, polyrhythmic and full of contrasts. Moreover, he has honed his technique at workshops of improvisa- tion and composition where he has played with virtuous names, such as Carlos Zíngaro, Peter Kowald, Gunther Muller or Patrick Brennan. He has also performed with several musicians, like Hiroshi Kobayashi, Cristin Wilboltz, Nathan Fuhr, Blaise Siwula, Per Anders Nilsson, John Zorn, Nobuyasu Furuya, Jason Stein, Nate Wooley, John Butcher, Lotte Anker, Joe McPhee, Keir Neuringer, among others. In 2010 Pinheiro formed his project RED Trio, with Hernâni Faustino (bass) and Gabriel Ferrandini (drums). The band has recorded four albums with Clean Feed and Nobusiness Records and performed live at jazz and improvised music festivals and concerts in Portugal, USA, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Poland and Romenia. He is also a member of the Nobuyasu Furuya Quintet, which has two released albums by Chitei Records e Nobusiness Records.
