Stephan Mathieu, who works in electroacoustics and abstract digitala, in a recording from a commissioned A/V piece using radio and processing, performed live in Buenos Aires with Caro Mikalef on phonoharps and Ebows.

Mathieu, Stephan & Caro Mikalef
Radioland (Panoramica)

Label: Line
Country: USA

"After 2011′s quickly sold-out edition Remain (LINE_047), Stephan Mathieu returns to LINE with a majestic new collaborative live work with Argentine artist Caro Mikalef.

Radioland (Panorámica) is originally audiovisual piece commissioned by Wili Peloche and Martín Borini for Panorámica, performed live on March 11, 2011 at Espacio Fundación Telefónica Buenos Aires with a setup comprising two Fender Twin amps, an Ampeg SVT-810 and a 21 x 4m video projection.

Stephan Mathieu (b. 1967) is a self taught composer and performer of his own music, working in the fields of electroacoustics and abstract digitala. His sound is largely based on early instruments, environmental sound and obsolete media, which are recorded and transformed by means of experimental microphony, re-editing techniques and software processes involving spectral analysis and convolution; it has been compared to the landscape paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, the work of Colorfield artists Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Ellsworth Kelly.

During the last decade Stephan's music has been released on 30 CDs and vinyl records. Apart from refining his solo work he currently collaborates with Sylvain Chauveau, Robert Hampson/Main, Taylor Deupree, Jozef van Wissem and David Sylvian in live and studio projects.

Since 1992 he performed his music live in solo shows and on festivals all over Europe, Scandinavia, North and South America and created various audio installations for galleries and museums, a glass-blowing factory, a 17th century garden, Berlin Mitte, a 19th century steel plant, parks, an arrangement of 30 Peugeots, a late antique throne hall and many other unique sites.

"I'm a collector of 78rpm records from the 1910s and 20s, the era of acoustic and early electronic audio recording. I love the way they transport sound."

Caro Mikalef (b. 1972) runs Cabina, a design studio co-founded with Coni Luna in Buenos Aires in 2001. Cabinas work is featured in numerous international publications, their audiovisual piece Buenos Aires Rorschach was presented at DMY International Design Festival Berlin 2011. Mikalef's love for a mix of poetry, literature and design is expressed in her weblog.

As a performer of music she is specialized in playing the octave virginals and ebowed Phonoharp zither.

Collaborating since 2009, Mikalef and Mathieu had premiered their first mutual work Constellations, a mechanical-acoustic piece for renaissance claviers and spectral light at Sonar2010 in Barcelona. They are currently working on a new version of Process, initially created for the 25th Zagreb Music Biennale. Caro and Stephan are also DJ de.ar"-Line
