"Kazuhisa Uchihashi (内橋和久, Uchihashi Kazuhisa) is a Japanese guitarist involved in free improvisation music. Born in 1959 in Osaka, Uchihashi began to play the guitar at age 12, playing in various rock bands, though he later studied jazz music. Uchihashi also plays daxophone, and in addition to his role as a free improviser, Uchihashi has been the musical director for Osaka theatre group Ishinha, has held improvisation workshops (a project known as New Music Action) in various cities in Japan, as well as London, Oslo, and currently in Vienna also. "Toshimaru Nakamura is a Japanese musician, active in free improvisation and Japanese onkyo.

He began his career playing rock and roll guitar, but gradually explored other types of music, even abandoning guitar, and started working on circuit bending. He uses a mixing console as a live, interactive musical instrument: "Nakamura plays the 'no-input mixing board', connecting the input of the board to the output, then manipulating the resultant audio feedback."

Nakamura's music has been described as "sounds ranging from piercing high tones and shimmering whistles to galumphing, crackle-spattered bass patterns."

Nakamura founded the ensemble A Paragon of Beauty in 1992. He has recorded solo albums, worked as a session musician, and collaborated with artists including Sachiko M ("a kindred spirit"), Otomo Yoshihide, Keith Rowe, John Butcher, Nicholas Bussmann, Taku Sugimoto, Tetuzi Akiyama, dancer Kim Ito, and drummer Jason Kahn."

"The Berlin-based clarinetist and composer/performer focuses on a subtle musicality of sound and noise phenomena. As an autodidact he has developed dubious manners on his instrument. His music is rooted in abstractness, including increasingly an insidious expressivity and a pre-melodic quality. He works on the borderline of composition and improvisation, with a preference for long-term collaborations.

His projects are The International Nothing - clarinet duo with Michael Thieke (cd: Mainstream, ftarri 2006 / less action, less excitement, less everything, ftarri 2010 / the dark side of success, ftarri 2014), los glissandinos with klaus filip (cd: Stand clear, creative sources 2005), the magic i.D. - Song Project with margareth kammerer, christof kurzmann & michael thieke (cd/vinyl: Till my breath gives out, erstwhile 2008 / i'm so awake - sleepless i feel, staubgold 2011), duo with Burkhard Stangl (cd: Musik - ein portrait in sehnsucht, erstwhile 2009), the dogmatics with Chris Abrahams (lp: The sacrifice for the music became our lifestyle, monotype 2012), here comes the sun with gunter schneider & barbara romen (cd: Here comes the sun, mikroton 2012), Kommando Raumschiff Zitrone with Christof kurzmann (cd: First time ever i saw your face, quincunx 2006), duo with Bernhard Gal (cd: Going round in serpentines, charhizma 2005), rebecca with michael renkel (cd: Rebecca [two variations], charhizma 2003), No Furniture with Boris Baltschun and Axel Dörner (cd: No furniture, creative sources 2003), and (exceptionally) solo.

Kai has been the commander of Raumschiff Zitrone from 2000 to 2006, joined by christof kurzmann in 2002. Recently both commanders have been retired and closed the legendary raumschiff zitrone which has presented concerts of countless international artists. In 2001 he co-initiated together with gregor hotz and conrad noack berlin's experimental music platform www.Echtzeitmusik.De.

Kai was artist-in-residense at quartier21 (part of museumsquartierwien, vienna) in 2004. As a result of fruitful collaborations and good friendships vienna feels like a second home for him."

"The Berlin-based clarinetist/composer/performer Michael Thieke is equally at home across a broad range of musical environments, such as experimental song forms, collectively composing projects, improvising collectives, and music on the fringes of jazz. He is exploring the minutiae of sound, timbre and noise, with a particular interest in microtonality and related sound phenomena, and with a preference for long-term collaborations and collective work.

Some of his current Projects are: The International Nothing (with Kai Fagaschinski cl, CD on ftarri), The Magic I.D. (with Christof Kurzmann, Kai Fagaschinski, Margareth Kammerer, CD/LP on ErstPop and staubgold), The Pitch (with Boris Baltschun organ, Koen Nutters b, Morten Olsen dr, LP on gaffer), Der lange Schatten (with Håvard Wiik p, Antonio Borghini b), Voutchkova/Thieke (with Biliana Voutchkova vl), Splitter Orchester, Toulemonde/Thieke (with Olivier Toulemonde acoustic objects), Hotelgäste (with Derek Shirley b, Dave Bennett g, CD on schraum, LP on self), Michael Thieke Unununium (with Luca Venitucci acc/p, Martin Siewert g, Christian Weber b, Derek Shirley b, Steve Heather dr, Eric Schaefer dr, CD on charhizma), motif (with Atle Nymo sax, Håkon Mjåset Johansen dr, Eivind Lønning tp, Ole Morten Vågan b, Håvard Wiik p), Porta Chiusa (with paed Conca cl, Hans Koch cl), Spirit Songs (with Mike Cooper voc/g, Elio Martusciello el, Fabrizio Spera dr, Luca Venitucci acc/el.), Roman Tics (with Burkhard Beins, Luca Venitucci, CD on Cathnor), Cowards Bend The Knee (Live Music in different setups with the film Cowards Bend The Knee by Guy Maddin), Gebhard Ullmann's The Clarinet Trio (with Gebhard Ullmann bass clarinet, Jürgen Kupke clarinet) and Uli Gumpert Workshop Band."

"Taku Unami was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1976. He is a composer and improviser working with assorted stringed instruments, including the guitar, mandolin, and contraguitar, laptop and vibrating objects (from which he amplifies the inaudible vibrations). Despite being linked to minimal improvisation his music is hardly classifiable, being able to surprise listeners on every new release, raising unforeseen questions and forging new paths for improvisation. He is part of the group HOSE and has active collaborations with Mattin, Taku Sugimoto and Masahiko Okura. In the past he has worked with Radu Malfatti, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Klaus Filip, Masafumi Ezaki, Burkhard Stangl, Rhodri Davies and Keith Rowe, among others. Unami has also composed for film, including 'Lost My Way' (directed by Takeshi Furusawa) and 'In 1,000,000 years' (directed by Isao Okishima). He has released more than 30 records, both solo and in numerous groups and collaborations. He runs the influential label Hibari Music and co-organizes the Tokyo concert series Chamber Music Concerts with Taku Sugimoto and Masahiko Okura."

"Klaus Filip *1963 computer music, programming, composition. Klaus Filip is a performer/composer/programmer and is maybe the first viennese musician, who used the laptop on stage at around 1993. Study of Musicology and Elektroacoustics (ELAK) at Wofgang Musil at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien. The main focus of his current work is sinewaves, whose subtle and adducent sounds are used in a wide dynamic range. As a sound artist he searches to cross sound and light. Klaus Filip runs a software project called ppooll (formerly known as lloopp) that is a networking collection of a variety of modules. This freeware is widely used by improvising musicians all over the world. Teaching position at the university of applied arts, vienna. Steady dispute with the computer as a musical instrument.

Colaborations with: Radu Malfatti, Kai Fagaschinski, Werner Dafeldecker, Dieb13, Christof Kurzmann, Boris Hauf, Christian Fennesz, Jason Kahn, John Butcher, Sabine Marte, Gilles Aubry, Noid, Mattin, Red White, Cynthia Schwertsik, Cordula Bösze, Silvia Fässler, Taku Unami, Oblaat, Taku Sugimoto, Toshimaru Nakamura, Tim Blechmann, Ivan Palacky, Burkhard Stangl, Eddie Prevost, John Tilbury, Ko Ichikawa, Nikos Veliotis, Axel Dörner, Masahiko Okura, Susanna Gartmayer, Jean-Luc Guionnet, Seijiro Murayama, Katharina Klement, Philipp Leitner, Thomas Strehl, Seymour Wright, Posset, Agnes Hvizdalek, Dafne Vicente-Sandoval, Leonel Kaplan, Sergio Merce U.A."

"noid /aka Arnold Haberl *1970, studied cello and mathematics. He is teaching at the Multimedia-Art department of the University for Applied Science in Salzburg.

The composer, sound-artist, cello player and improvisor understands his work as fundamental research leading to a wide range of contradictory outcome. Spanning from cello-solo and tape-pieces to compositions for ensembles, improvisation scores or performances with electronic or hybrid instruments, from sound-installations to videos and imaginary music. Also his contributions as a programmer for the freeware "ppooll" (http://ppooll.klingt.org) can be seen in this context. What makes his cello playing special is his approach to find a world within instead of trying to expand the range of the instrument. Looking at the instrument as a fact or maybe even a score in itself without obeying the historical connotations."

"Wolfgang Fuchs. Born on 21 February 1949 in Landau/Palatine, died of a heart attack in Berlin 3 February 2016; contrabass clarinet, bass clarinet, sopranino saxophone.

Wolfgang Fuchs' first musical instruments, at the age of nine, were violin and mandolin but, during his studies at the Music Academy of Karlsruhe between 1969 and 1974 he studied saxophone and clarinet. Moving to Berlin in 1974 he has, since 1976, worked as freelance musician primarily in the area of freely-improvised music but also in a wide range of mixed-media projects featuring music and other arts. Over the years, he has played with a large number and variety of musicians including Fred van Hove and Peter Hollinger or Paul Lytton in Berliner Begegnung (1983-1987), Paul Lytton and Mats Gustafsson (toured Sweden as a trio in 1994), Philipp Wachsmann and Paul Lytton (toured England as a trio in 1995), and Lingua (with Thomas Lehn and Fabrizio Spera, 2000). He has been a member of Butch Morris' Berlin Skyscrapers large group conduction (1995 and 1999) and a member of various Cecil Taylor projects including the 1986 European American Group, the 1990 Orchestra that appeared at Total Taylor Total, a 1991 Scandinavian tour featuring Taylor with Tony Oxley, Barry Guy and Harri Sjöström, and the 1999 Workshop Ensemble. In 1996 he was founder and leader of berlin factory, a workshop ensemble with young Berlin-based musicians which has since performed at Soundworkshop 97: Contemporary Music in Kreuzberg and performed Fuchs' composition Aqua libre at the festival Kryptonale IV in Berlin in 1998.

Perhaps the most well-known, long-standing large group with which Fuchs has been associated is King Übü Örchestrü. He was founder of the tentet in 1983 and has been leader ever since with changes in personnel and size, regrouping periodically for concerts and recordings: a tour in Germany in 1989; a recorded performance in 1992 at the Akademie der Kunste, Berlin; appearance at Nickelsdorf Festival, Austria in 1995; a recording made at the Total Music Meeting in Berlin in 1998; and an extended performance with guest vocalists and narrators to mark the group's 20th anniversary at Total Music Meeting 2003. A spontaneous octet of some members of King Übü Örchestrü with other European improvisers and US musicians - Mount Washington from 2003 - works in a similar soundworld.

Fuchs has also worked extensively over a long period with George Katzer, Hans Koch and Peter van Bergen. His first encounter and collaboration with Katzer occured in 1988 to be followed over the next few years with participation at the Electron-Music-Festival at Skinnskatteberg, Stockholm, in Innergerman Encounters at Rostock, Potsdam and in Katzer's multimedia project, Rooms, in Berlin, (all 1990); a trio performance with Hannes Bauer at Festival Syntèse in Bourges, France (1991); concerts at Villa Massimo, Rome in trio with Helmut Zapf (1996); a trio concert with Hannes Bauer at Festival Brandendburgische Kunsttage (1998); and a duo in Löbau, Scharoun-Villa in 2001. Katzer has also been a member of King Übü Örchestrü.

The contrabass clarinet trio with Hans Koch and Peter van Bergen was formed in 1993 under the name Holz für Europa and has made almost two-yearly appearances since then. In the mid-1990s, Alexander von Schlippenbach was commissioned to provide new arrangements of eleven Eric Dolphy compositions, performed in 1997 by the trio as the Eric Dolphy Project. The trio undertook a concert tour of the Netherlands in 1999, played concerts in Switzerland and Germany in 2000, and toured the US, including a performance at the Empty Bottle Festival in Chicago, in 2001.

Fuchs work in mixed media has included:

improvised music to experimental films by, among others, Vikking Eggeling, Ernie Gehr, Kurt Kren, Helmut Nickels, Junichi Okujama, Michael Proksch, Hans Richter, and Diter Rot
various work with Sven-Åke Johansson, including a film music concert tour in 1981, SAJ's operetta Der Spaten und die Harke in 1984 and participation in Über die Ursache der Meinungsverschiedenheiten beim Turmbau zu Babel an operetta by Alexander von Schlippenbach and SAJ, performed at the Staatstheater Stuttgart and Stadttheater Gütersloh (Germany)
other work with Alexander von Schlippenbach, including a tour of film and improvised music in 1984 and, in 1985, a live performance with improvised music to the newly reconstructed integral version of director Erich von Stroheim's film Queen Kelly, staged at the International Filmfestival of Berlin
collaborations, which began in 1997, with writer and poet Gerd-Peter Eigner and which includes Musica Lingu (Improvisation & declamation) a trio with Alexander von Schlippenbach
participant of the multi-media performance Large Area (music, dance, actors, acrobats) staged in Oberhausen in 1986
in 1996, participation in Fahrtenbuch, a scenic-musical collage by director Alexander Stillmark with texts by poet Durs Grünbein and others and compositions by Georg Katzer, first performed at the Hebbel-Theater, Berlin, subsequently on tour in Poland
in 1997 participation in And now - where to?, a homage to Heinrich Heine (Goethe-Institut Marseille)
his close interest in painting is indicated by his regular use of the work of Max Neumann on his LP and CD covers.

More recently, Wolfgang Fuchs has become involved in two new trios: Three October Meetings and The New Flags. Three October Meetings comprises Fuchs along with two young North American musicians: Damon Smith on double bass and Jerome Bryerton on percussion who first played together in 1997 during Fuchs solo tour of the US. They recorded the excellent CD which subsequently gave rise to their name in 2001 and have since toured the US west coast and Germany, playing important festivals in San Francsico, Berlin and Austria. The New Flags was formed in June 2002 with Xu Fengxia, guzheng, voice and Roger Turner, drumset; they appeared at Total Music Meeting in 2002.

Wolfgang Fuchs has received a number of awards and grants, including a 3-month grant in 1996 from the Academy of Fine Arts, Berlin to be artist in residence at Villa Serpentara, Olevano Romano, Italy. From 2001, he has been artistic director of the Total Music Meeting in Berlin."

"Angélica Castelló Recorder player, composer, improviser, sound artist, curator, teacher.

Born in Mexico City in 1972, Castelló studied music in her native town at the Conservatorio Nacional de México, at the Université de Montréal, at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, at the Konservatorium der Stadt Wien and at the Department of Composition and Electroacoustics at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. Since 1999, she has lived in Vienna, where she is a teacher. In the year 2004, she founded the concert series "Neue Musik in St. Ruprecht", and has organised hundreds of concerts and events.

Even though she remains devoted to old music, new and electroacoustic music take center stage in her work. She co-founded the ensembles Low Frequency Orchestra, frufru (with Maja Osojnik), cilantro (with Billy Roisz), subshrubs (with Katharina Klement, Tamara Wilhelm and Maja Osojnik) and Chesterfield (with Burkhard Stangl) Plenum, Zimt (with Gunter Schneider, Barbara Romen and Burkhard Stangl) a.o.. She has performed in Europe and America with these ensembles and with other musicians such as, Martin Siewert, John Butcher, Dafne Vicente-Sandoval, Urkuma, Franz Hautzinger, Isabelle Duthoit, dieb13, Jerome Noetinger, Mario de Vega, Attila Faraveli, Kazu Uchihashi, Bonnie Jones, Juanjose Rivas, Steve Bates, Olga Neuwirth, Wolfgang Mitterer and others.

As a composer, she writes for her own instruments (mainly the Paetzold sub great bass recorder, with and without electronics) and for ensembles (amongst them the Danubia Saxophonquartett, Reconsil Ensemble Vienna and the Haydn Piano Trio) as well as Electroacustic Works. Her music has been published by the labels Mosz, Instertellar Records, Orlando Records, einklang_records, Mandorla Label, Mikroton Recordings, Monotype Records and chmafu nocords. Numerous composers, including Hilda Paredes, Daniel de la Cuesta, Katharina Klement, Burkhard Stangl, Jorge Sánchez-Chiong, and Mario Lavista, have worked with Angélica Castelló or dedicated pieces to her. In recent years, Castelló's work has included installations that operate at the interface of music, performance and visual arts (Electroaltar, Electroaltar for J.C., Electroaltar für C.N., Margarita' Stillleben Theater).

Her debut album, "Bestario", unites the multifaceted nature of Angélica Castelló's work: Recordings of her own instruments serve as the raw material for pieces in which she edits the sounds of her flutes, sometimes beyond recognition, and combines them with frequently deformed fragments of other elements - be they electronically produced or found elsewhere - to a musical entity in which multiple layers overlap. She weaves existing pieces of other composers, such as Bach, into these contemporary forms of electronic processing, thereby referencing her work as an interpreter of old music. Even though her other sources of inspiration, such as from literature or visual arts, often have specific roots, they lead Castelló to an abstract engagement with such topics as death, and dealing with traumatic encounters. Wide-ranging combinations of sounds that are constantly and sometimes simultaneously moving in different directions provide continuity as well as surprises, and when listened to repeatedly, they shed new light on the beasts from literature, the animal kingdom, and daily life that have been set to music."
