The Blue Notes, precursors to Brotherhood of Breath, escaped racial pressures in South Africa by migrating to the UK, creating a small but vital catalog in the mid 60s.

Blue Notes: McGregor / Pukwana / Moyake / Feza / Moholo
The Ogun Collection

Label: Ogun
Country: UK

"South Africa's Blue Notes escaped to London in 1965 and transformed British jazz. Then, one by one, they died, leaving wonder-drummer Louis Moholo (now back in Cape Town) as the only survivor.

This superb five-CD box set collects together an early recording made in Durban in 1964 with a 1977 concert from the 100 Club and the two searing tribute albums recorded following the deaths of trumpeter Mongezi Feza and bassist Johnny Dyani. The distance between jaunty township bop to free-jazz threnody is almost unbearably intense. But this is history: you have to hear it."-Phil Johnson, The Independent (UK)
