Arcane Device released a stunning amount of material in the 80's and 90's using David Myers' Feedback machines. These machines allowed for a great deal of control over feedback, microscopically viewing a fractional piece of aberrant sound to create surprisingly rich alien soundscapes. These sounds were then captured and arranged in various ways to suit each of his projects. This caught the ear of Chris Cutler at Recommended Records, who put out his amazing Engines of Myth album in the late 80's, more recently re-released on CD; he also wrote in the Recommended Records Quarterlies about how to construct a feedback machine. Arcane Device released albums and contributed to compilations on some of the 80's and 90's finest electroacoustic labels, including Generation Unlimited, RRRecords, Staalplaat, Silent Records, and Subterranean.

Myer's work in the 2000's has concentrated on other electroacoustic approaches to sound making, leaving a large amount of material unreleased or available only on obscure compilations. Arcane Device: Devices 1987-2007 is a 2-CD anthology of rare and previously unreleased Arcane Device. The first disc consists of tracks from compilations issued by Subterranean Records, Tragic Figures, SFCR Tapes, and Generations Unlimited, but also unreleased material remastered and/or remixed in 2007. The second disc is a "Feedback Symphony" based on various recordings from the late 80s - early 90s, presented in four movements and completed in 2007.
