Scott, Raymond
Manhattan Research INC.

Label: Basta
Country: The Netherlands

Raymond Scott used the name that he built for himself in the 1930's creating popular novelty records, along with his wife's wealth, to develop a private electronic music laboratory on Long Island named "Manhattan Research, Inc." His aim was to create a jingle factory, focusing primarly on the young television industry. He developed instruments such as the Electronium, Clavivox, Bandito the Bongo Artist, and an early sequencer called the Circle Machine. The story is told in this book, 144 pages with many color pictures of Scott and his devices, including interviews with the late Robert Moog, Herb Deutsch, Alan Entenman, and Mitzi Scott and a chapter about his work with Muppet-man Jim Henson, for whom Henson did soundtrack work for his some of his earliest films. The two CDs are amazing archives of Scott's work from MRI, including commercials for General Motors, the aforementioned Henson films, Hostess Twinkies, Baltimore Gas & Electric, Ford, Vicks, Bendix, Sprite and IBM. Other more experimental works include a piece for the Electronium, and an excellent montage, "Space Mystery." Essential for anyone interested in Scott or the development and commercial application of early electronics.
