The Satoko Fujii Trio with Mark Dresser and Jim Black in their 6th release, a bold risk-taking group with deep communication and incredible performances.

Fujii Trio, Satoko
Illusion Suite

Label: Libra
Country: Japan

"Pianist Satoko Fujii, bassist Mark Dresser, and drummer Jim Black engage in four nearly free improvisations on this CD. Occasionally there are transitions and mood changes worked out in advance for the episodic music, but mostly it is quite spontaneous. The 34-minute "Illusion Suite" starts with bowed bass and becomes a free improvisation that gradually builds up while centered around a key. Patterns are developed à la Keith Jarrett, there are some free-form outbursts, and the lengthy performance ends peacefully and mournfully. The other three selections are briefer, and include some spooky bowed bass on "An Irregular Course," a playful section on "Flying to the South," and a bit of witty interplay during "An Insane Scheme." Fujii's playing is at times reminiscent of Cecil Taylor, except that she uses more space and is a bit more concise. This admirable if often dry set is easier to respect than to love."-Scott Yanow
