"I admit that I cannot manage to review all the albums from Fou Records, the label of Jean-Marc Foussat, the enthusiast of "obsolete" analog electronics (it seems). He plays an old AKS from the 70s (the instrument of Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream and Jean-Michel Jarre) and over the albums, some free-music listeners less receptive to electronics might get tired of it. But with the help of Xavier Camarasa's Fender Rhodes electric piano, his approach is completely renewed. This is evident in "Profondement concealed" (24'47), a haunted and slightly rowdy duet recorded at the Cameleon in Toulouse and whose coherence is surprising given the sound repertoires and the divergent approach of the two improvisers.
The second piece recorded in this place also lets us hear the mysterious bass saxophonist Marc Maffiolo, Milieu de nuit (16'03''). His participation and his breathing effects add even more mystery and sound research, wonderfully completing the excellent demonstration of different improvisation. It should be noted that J-MF uses his voice "in the distance". It buzzes, hovers, flies, sizzles, oscillates, spits, swirls, jumps; the sounds become bolder, intertwine their destinies, saturate, bellow in the night... with sometimes rustling and obsessive ostinatos to the point of overflowing... greasy skids in thick puddles of cosmic oils which squirt into the multicolored space with sound effects - cinema sound effects in the grip of a bogged down sci-fi scenario. The bass sax bites and hoots in the depths. The electronic sound discoveries follow one another without resembling each other.
The day before, June 26, 2023 at the Impromptu in Bordeaux, the 32'49'' of "Passage Decouvert" begins with pearly fingerings on the piano keyboard and ghost voices. The pianist's playing moves imperturbably while J-MF, once again, pulls new ideas from his bag of tricks. Dialogue is established, imaginary birds whistle over our heads and we are off on a great adventure. Cosmic marimba sounds, lunatic counterpoints, twists and turns on the keyboard... the music swirls, frantic gyration, polyphony of a third type, the improvisation takes place over time to erase the feeling of time, rapid, slender and motionless. The sounds evolve, the whistles renew their dynamics, their densities and their textures, the synth vocalizes... and we are only a third of the way through... Beyond the dreamed "Tangerine", the acidic and cursed taste of forbidden fruits and a constant sound, formal renewal which makes this music attractive without any weariness. Great exotic album! Which team !"-J-M. Van Schouwburg

Since the mid-1970s, Foussat had belonged to groups such as Lézard Marçio, in which he contributed the sounds of concrete music with magnetic tapes. In 1981, he finished his first solo album, Abattage, which was released in 1983. In the ensemble Marteau Rouge (with the guitarist Jean-François Pauvros and the drummer Makoto Sato), he also collaborated with Evan Parker. Together with the saxophonist Sylvain Guérineau, he formed the duo Aliquid, which also appeared with Joe McPhee ( Quod, 2014). In addition to soloprograms, he also starred with Noël Akchoté / Roger Turner, Samuel Blaser, Émilie Lesbros, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Sophie Agnel, Daunik Lazro and numerous other musicians, as well as the Fortuna 21 Octet of Raymond Boni and the department of education psychique on." ^ Hide Bio for Jean-Marc Foussat • Show Bio for Marc Maffiolo "Marc Maffiolo encountered saxophones first through sitting in a workshop repairing them for six years in the Grenoble region. During this period, he joined Micromégas, an amateur musical practice group directed by pianist François Raulin of the La Forge collective. Here he discovered improvisation in writing and all other forms of playing, meeting musicians such as Emmanuel Scarpa, Wolgang Puschnig, Marc Ducret, Christophe Monniot... A discovery that made him want to give a much more important place to musical practice. Today, he lives in Toulouse. A "full-time" musician, he plays mainly bass saxophone (sometimes tenor). His main focus is the sounds of the instrument and their multiple facets, their voices." ^ Hide Bio for Marc Maffiolo
