Bassist and electronic artist Adam Linson brought this group together to explore new contexts at the intersection of jazz and computer music using real-time processing and interactive electronics.

Linson, Adam Systems Quartet (Dorner / Mahall / Linson / Lytton)
Figures And Grounds

Label: psi
Country: UK

"My role in bringing together this group was to provide a new context for the diverse talents of these musicians. From the outset, the aim of the group was to explore the range of possibilities at the intersection of jazz and computer music.

To extend the musical environment of the improvisational jazz quartet, I took live acoustic audio feeds from the four of us and subjected them to an array of manipulations including real-time signal processing - to provide an added point of interaction for the instruments being processed - and time-delayed sampling and layering (also subjected to signal processing) to multiply the instrumental voices and provide additional lines and textures with which to interact. In some cases I would set up and interactive electronic environment and return to the bass. In other cases, I would set aside the bass temporarily to actively "conduct" the array input and output feeds. [...]"-Adam Linson, from the liner notes
