NY reedist Ned Rothenberg and Japanese pianist Masahiko Sato in a superb set of duo recordings playing both free/open improvisation and idiomatic pieces including Monk's "Epistrophy" - superb!

Rothenberg, Ned & Masahiko Sato
Decisive Action

Label: EWE-BAJ
Country: Japan

NY reedist Ned Rothenberg and Japanese pianist Masahiko Sato in a superb set of duo recordings playing both free/open improvisation and standard pieces including Monk's "Epistrophy". Rothenberg explains in the liner notes that "Relationships between improvisers are no different than those betweenother people. Sometimes you hae an immediate attraction to someone but the fire cools. Sometimes there is an enduring bond that overcomes many small battles. With Satoh-san I feel a powerful sense of mutual understanding. If there is any frustration in the relationship it is that we live on opposite sides of the planet and our chances to play together are limited. However, as a result I think we keep some of the freshness that happens with a first encounter. At the same time, since it is now 12 years that we have known each other, there is a great sense of mutual trust and with that a wonderful combination of freedom and focus."
