5 piece UK band based in London playing rock with a jazz orientation, instrumental material with an edge that reminds the listener of Henry Cow, Hatfield, Soft, &c.

Astrakan
JAST 01

Label: Jaguar Steps
Country: UK

An excellent 5 piece instrumental rock band based in London playing music with chamber/R.I.O. influences. The band started as the Astrakan Collective and was formed in 2004 by Michael Garcia to play original tunes that combined structured and improvised material in a slightly new way. The group have played at various London venues, including the Vortex, and have run their own occasional 'Club Astrakan' in various venues.

"Michael Garcia: Keyboards

Michael writes most of the group's material and has been part of London's experimental music scene for a number of years. He also plays vibraphone and accordion. Charles Mingus, Harry Partch, Bernard Hermann and Gunter Hampel have all at various times influenced his composing.

Dave Fowler: Drums

Dave has worked with many musicians on the London scene including Elton Dean, Jim Dvorak and Graham Clarke (Gong associate). His musicianship and versatility are key elements of the group and he also contributes material.

Raymond Hardy: Tenor and Soprano Saxophone

Raymond has been involved with the group from the start providing dynamic solos and crisp top lines. He also contributes material.

Jerry Wigens: Guitar

Jerry is a composer and improviser who also writes for the band. His exploratory guitar playing has become a defining aspect of the group's sound.

Paul Whelpton: Bass

Paul joined the group in late 2009. He plays both double bass and bass guitar and has wide experience in both rock and jazz fields.

Influences From punk to free jazz to avant-garde classical music, ambient electronica, group improvisation, tango, psychedelia, prog rock etc etc etc.Sounds Like Softs, Hatfields, Acoustic Ladyland, Miles, Cow, Zappa."-Astrakan MySpace Page
