Akiyama, Tetuzi / Jozef van Wissem: Hymn For A Fallen Angel

Label: Incunabulum (INC 003CD)

Tetuzi Akiyama-Martin HD-28 Guitar, Bottle Neck / Jozef van Wissem-Baroque Lute, Bottle Neck, Edits

"Minimal classical contemporary folk blues played by Japanese rising improv star guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama and Dutch/American lute player/composer Jozef van Wissem, Their second CD as a duo. 'The music is gradual and contemplative, unfolding like an unhurried chess game, edging forward in a shared yet adaptable and accommodating language. Courtly arpeggios, blues slurs and other pointers beyond the frame don't disrupt the Feldmanesque autonomy of their continually mutating, freely patterned flow.'-The [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

As on their earlier outing, Arnal and Beeferman eschew timbral trickery and sensational sound painting in favor of exploring and expanding on the more "traditional" acoustic palette of the drum kit and piano; unlike [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

This work culminated in four performances beginning withthe solo piano and the trio and finishing withtwo performances with the ensemble. Label: LEO (477)

John Wolf Brennan-Piano, Melodica / Alex Cline-Percussion, Drums / Daniele Patumi-Bass / Tscho Theissing-Violin / John Voirol-Synthesizer, Soprano & Tenor Sax

"Pianist John Wolf Brennan and his quintet's music is adventurous and often quite dissonant but it is also quirky, episodic, witty in spots and full of variety. The title cut, "Shooting Stars & Traffic Lights," has violinist Tscho Theissing playing a sweet classical melody that is soon overrun but not completely defeated by other sounds and ideas. "Ognatango" is an eccentric tango, and other pieces range from exuberant to somber, brief sound explorations to more highly developed interplay. [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Stands such as this were once the ubiquitous proving ground for improvisers working through jazz, but are now a rarity. A solo improvisation, recorded perhaps under duress, Lexicon is a miniature document of Thom Golub's celebrational, monumental and sustained attack-style on the double bass. Label: House Leek Audio (HLA 001)

Cody Oliver-guitar, accordion, clarinet, violin, computer

Multilayered minimal improv based around various string and electro-acoustic sources, using encompassing and rotating noise floors over which he plays guitar and other string instruments. The pieces slowly build, occasionally making a seething and howling mix that reminds one of the work of Soopa improvisers, wrenching sounds dragged over odd sound constructions. The core of the band is the duo of guitarist/leader Mayo Thompson and drummer Jesse Chamberlain, recording with familiar names including David Thomas, Tony Maimone, Allen Ravenstine and Scott Krauss (essentially, [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Dr. Id / Ju Suk Reet Meate, Oblivia / Conroy / Burned Mind / Perry Robinson

Avant-rockers Smegma came out of the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS) scene from the 1970's, and continue to this day with their odd psychedelic improvisations and opaque and unusual persona, with past member names like Chucko D. K. Fatts, Cheezit-Ritz, or Dr. Odd. They now work from Portland, Oregon, releasing records on their own Pigface label and playing at festivals like this No-Fun Festival in Brooklyn, NY, joined by New Yorker Perry Robinson on clarinets. Takayanagi New Direction for the Art, Masayuki: Complete " La Grima"

Label: Doubtmusic (DMH-113)

Masayuki Takayanagi-guitar / Kenji Mori-saxophone / Hiroshi Yamazaki-percussion

"La Grima (Tears) was performed on August 14, 1971, at the Genyasai festival in Sanrizuka, Japan. The first six minutes or so of this performance can be heard on the omnibus LP Genya (released on CD in 2004). This CD presents the complete, unedited version of the performance.

As if to slash through the audience's scornful, jeering reaction to Takayanagi's opening remarks, the group launched into a fiercely convulsive performance. Despite having a variety of objects thrown at them, [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Thompson, Molly: Ash

Label: White Lime Records (White Lime 001)

Molly Thompson-voice, accordion / Jody Redhage-voice, cello / Kamala Sankaram-voice / Kathleen Supové-piano / Patrick Kane McCarthy-electric guitar / Laura Harrison-bass clarinet / Margaret Lancaster-alto flute / Sycil Mathai-trumpet / Yumi Oshima-viola / Guest Musicians: Kristine Barrett-voice / Theresa Wong-cello / Quentin Sirjacq-piano

With her album ASH, New York composer/performer Molly Thompson, who studied extensively with Fred Frith, is on a unique path. Instead of taking the current route of many composers (i.e. forming large gang-like collectives that perform each others music) she writes very personal chamber songs that don't fit into any particular compositional genre. So, are they compositions or are they songs? One might say that they're more complex than songs without losing the gripping melodic center of most [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Tujiko, Noriko: Solo

Label: Editions Mego (EMEGO 078CD)

Tujiko Noriko

This is Osaka's Tujiko Noriko's third-full length release for Editions Mego. While still maintaining her trademark version of experimental Japanese pop, on Solo the edges have been polished with some of Noriko's most accomplished works. In part due to the mixing skills of Gerhard Potuznik and Tyme. One could even say a work of great maturity. Noriko herself best describes the record this way "Making music was like I drive and drive looking for a place where there is nobody. I would arrive [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Cage, John: Imaginary Landscapes

Label: Hat [now] ART (145)

Maelstrom Percussion Ensemble, Jan Williams conducting

"Improvising guitarist Derek Bailey has expressed the belief that "If you're going to explore uncharted territory, it's okay to carry a compass, but not a map." It's obvious; if you know where you're going and have plotted the most efficient or scenic course to get there, you may arrive without mishap but deprived of much of the drama, the danger, the unpredictable uniqueness of the journey. In the years following 1950, John Cage walked these paths of musical uncertainty, providing performers [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

Feldman, Morton: For Samuel Beckett

Label: Hat [now] ART (142)

Ensemble Modern conducted by Arturo Tamayo

"For Samuel Beckett" is a late (1987) work, rich in detail and lush in sound (especially in relation to so many of his more austere pieces, early and late), but troubling, obsessed, claustrophobic in spite of its scope. Given their shared attraction to shadow (Feldman's music uses chiaroscuro in the way Beckett meticulously exploited darkness and light and the moods in between on the stage and on the page), it's perhaps surprising that Feldman's dedication didn't involve the starker textures [ ... continued @ Squidco ]

One of Philip Glass' great achievements aside from his role as a minimalist pioneer has been his successful effort to establish the composer and associated ensemble as a viable musico-economic model. "Although best known for a collection of radical early works, throughout his life Leo Ornstein (1893-2002) wrote in diverse styles. Such stylistic eclecticism confounded his listeners, which, in turn, may explain why he chose to retire from the concert stage in order to follow his muse away from public pressure and scrutiny. "Though he was a contemporary of Glass, Reich, Riley, and Young, Charlemagne Palestine has rarely been included in the holy pantheon of New York minimalists. Perhaps it's his aversion to the use of a "minimalist" categorization to describe his work, or that his discography, until recent years, remained rather scant. Or even his personality, which has always been in contrast to the more somber and serious airs of many of his peers.
